The good: The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini delivers Android 4.2, 4G LTE, NFC, and a solid 5-megapixel camera for just $1 on contract.

The bad: Mediocre call quality and internal speed hiccups are two trade-offs for the price; you’ll especially notice shutter lag.

The bottom line: First-time smartphone buyers get a lot for a little with Samsung’s year-old Galaxy S3 Mini, but keep in mind that this is no high-end performer.

Motorola DROID X Android Verizon Cell Phone

The good: The Motorola Moto X squeezes a speedy camera and futuristic voice command capabilities into a well-crafted design that hits the sweet spot between screen size and comfort. The phone has great battery life and is available in an endless variety of customized designs.

The bad: With no expandable storage, space could get tight, especially on the 16GB base model. The screen isn’t as big and sharp as those on some competing handsets.

The bottom line: While in screen quality and storage capacity it lags behind rival superphones, the Moto X’s superbly compact and comfortable design, whiz-bang voice controls, and long battery life make it a worthy Android contender.

Fujifilm X-M1 review

The good: Thanks to the company’s X-Trans sensor and good JPEG processing, the Fujifilm X-M1 delivers some of the best image quality we’ve seen for less than $1,000. The camera’s also well designed and attractive.

The bad: Poor video quality and a subpar Wi-Fi implementation prove annoying drawbacks.

The bottom line: While it may not be the best overall camera available for less than $1,000, the Fujifilm X-M1 does deliver the best photo quality in its price class.

Nikon Coolpix S9500 review

The good: The well-priced Nikon Coolpix S9500 has an impressive zoom range for its size and weight. It has a full assortment of automatic shooting options and can capture HD movies as well as slow-motion clips. Built-in Wi-Fi allows you to directly send photos from the camera to iOS or Android devices.

The bad: Picture quality drops off indoors or in low-light conditions. Autofocus can be finicky under those conditions as well as when fully zoomed in. If semimanual and manual controls are a necessity you’re out of luck, and its flash is poorly placed.

The bottom line: With its long lens and compact size, plus extras like built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, the Nikon Coolpix S9500 is a very good point-and-shoot travel companion.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II review

The good: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II delivers excellent photos, speedy performance, and a broad feature set in an attractive, compact package.

The bad: The camera tends to clip bright highlights more than we typically see, and the slippery body lacks a grip. Plus, the lack of a manually triggered macro mode might put off some fans of close-up photography.

The bottom line: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II’s combination of looks, speed, flexibility, and photo quality makes it a great choice for enthusiasts who can afford the price tag.

The good: The HP Pavilion 23‘s giant, 23-inch display is uncommon in all-in-one PCs under $700.

The bad: The low price means slow performance and few extras. The lack of an HDMI input hurts the most.

The bottom line: HP has made an aggressive move in the budget PC space with this big-screen all-in-one that will serve as an affordable, generally capable home computer.
